Volkswagen unveils a turbo-diesel plug-in hybrid that could return incredible fuel economy.

foolishly, we neglected to put a man on the scene—is a plug-in hybrid boasting triple-digit fuel economy. It builds on prior super-high-efficiency concepts from VW, namely the 1-Liter that debuted in 2002 and the L1 concept that appeared in 2009. The former used a tiny diesel engine and was designed to travel 100 kilometers on a single liter of fuel, hence the name; the L1 added a plug-in hybrid system in pursuit of a more marketable approach to the same goal.

Like the L1, the XL1 uses a two-cylinder turbo-diesel. Displacing 800 cc, it is rated at 47 hp and 89 lb-ft of torque and transmits power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed DSG transmission. The electric motor pitches in with 27 hp and 74 lb-ft, and can work in parallel with the diesel or drive the car independent of it. Fully charged, the XL1 can travel up to 22 miles on electric power, and Volkswagen predicts a fuel-economy rating of 261 mpg in hybrid mode. Performance credentials include a claimed 11.9-second 0-to-62-mph run and a governed top speed of 99 mph.

Less Size, More Lightness

Riding on an 87.6-inch wheelbase and measuring 153.1 inches long, the XL1 has a footprint similar to that of the Mazda 2. But its Lamborghini Gallardo–like height (just 45.5 inches) helps create a slippery drag coefficient of 0.19. The unusual body design was largely influenced by the L1 concept, with a bubble-like greenhouse and sharply tapered rear end that help achieve the outstanding Cd. Two large scissor doors swing up from the A-pillar for easy—and showy—access. The cockpit has two bucket seats, with the passenger seat mounted slightly farther back than the driver’s.

The body is built from carbon fiber, with further weight gains realized by using magnesium wheels, ceramic brake discs, and aluminum suspension components. As a result, the XL1 tips the scales at a skinny 1753 pounds, with just 406 of those accounted for by steel or iron parts.

Present and Future

Volkswagen says the XL1 is “still very much a concept,” but this series of concepts is moving in a very deliberate direction: VW CEO Martin Winterkorn has promised a production version of the 1-Liter by 2013. We’re just wondering how well oil-rich Qatar receives the idea of a 261-mpg car. Next year, we’ll be sure to send someone to the show.

The History of Lunde’s Peoria Volkswagen

2012 Volkswagen Passat SEL Long-Term Update 4

Our 2012 Volkswagen Passat 2.5 SEL has been in the Motor Trend fleet for roughly six months. So far, our Car of the Year champ has racked up a little over 15,000 miles. Most recently, I took my wife and newborn up to Laguna Seca for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. I’ve done the drive more times than I count and in more cars than I can remember. Normally I am in a sportier hardware. I’ve driven an Audi TT and R8, a Porsche Cayman and Cayenne, a whole fleet of high-tech hardware for Best Driver’s Car and even my own 911SC.While it was certainly easy enough to fill the cargo space of something like an R8 with bags for two, this time we had bags for three. You might think a 20-pound person would travel pretty light, but in reality, parents are little more than Sherpas for their babies. The Passat’s mammoth trunk was filled with a pack-and-play (essentially a folding baby condo), a stroller, a pile of diapers, and associated paraphernalia, and while his clothes are small, a lack of food handling finesse means up to three ensembles a day are mandatory. A haul that would have required driving two Caymans didn’t even fill the Passat’s trunk to capacity. While I have certainly gotten there quicker during previous trips, I am not sure I arrived in more comfort. After a couple of hours I needed to adjust the seat, normally a bad sign on a 350-mile trip. Surprisingly, however, after the one adjustment I was all set for the rest of the drive. Not only is the Passat’s interior comfortable, but, thanks to its straight-line stability and typical German suspension tuning, half a day’s drive drops you off at your destination ready for action without needing a nap.Some of the back roads around Monterey are an enthusiast’s dream, with winding switchbacks and rollercoaster elevation changes. Sadly, the opportunity to really enjoy these roads is limited by traffic and a local police department that salivates months in advance of the motorsports gathering. The few opportunities we had to enjoy the roads reaffirmed my previous thoughts on the Passat’s handling. The linear steering makes flowing left-right combinations as fluid as mercury, snaking a line without jerking or throwing the car. There isn’t a dead spot in the center that makes for a definite transition from one direction to the other like in some cars. The progressive brake pedal means you can squeeze into the brakes and settle the front end down, and more important, allows you the lift out of the stoppers without the front end popping back up and throwing the weight off the front contact patches. The only real complaint with the Passat’s back-road prowess is still in the decidedly pedestrian rubber soles.

The weekend road trip made me appreciate the Passat even more than before. While I can’t wait to drive the new 1.8t coming next year, I was impressed with the mid-30 MPG mileage the five-banger returned on the road trip. Most of my mileage is still in town driving around L.A. and Orange County, so overall mileage still looks slightly low. I might need to make a few more road trips to swing the average closer to an actual combined number as well as put some wear on the tires as an excuse to get something more aggressive.
